Andros is the biggest island of the Bahamas. This island is so large that its area is almost as large as that of all of the other islands combined (about 6000 km²). Surrounded by high sea beds and an amazing coral reef, this island is a paradise for high sea lovers and a perfect spot for any divers or snorkelers. The Bahamas consist of many islands, with one island being only 80km away Florida, and another island being 113km from the coast of Haiti. Plants and Animals

A huge number of species live on that largely uninhabited island, and many of these species have yet have to be discovered. The most common specie is, without doubt, the mosquito!

However, there are many other interesting species you may encounter on the island, such as several types of crabs, running left and right, especially between the months of May and September. The most common crab is probably the hermit crab and the terrestrial crab, especially loved by people of Andros, who loves to cook them.

Wild boars hide in the brushwood while the red head vulture scrutinize the surroundings for food. Ospreys, herons, cormorants, white crown pigeons and the more rare ted-legged thrush are other birds that live on the island.

There are also many many types of plants. For example, over 40 species of orchids grow on Andros, as well as many medicinal plants, such as jacaranda (used as a treatment against skin cancer).

Diving and Snorkeling

The coral reef and the blue holes of Andros offer a real diving and snorkeling paradise. Close to the coast, there are quiet coral heavens, and the shallow waters are a shelter to millions of colorful and gentle fishes. Divers can also explore some wrecks, such as Marion, Barge and du Potomac. Along the coral reef, 225km long, things are getting a lot more exciting, especially with the plunging depths over the wall. Beaches

The coasts of Andros are simply neverending white sand strips. The best parts of the beach are located on North Andros near Nicholl’s Town, Small hope and Somerset Beach, and on South Andros, near Emerald Palms Beach, with never ending views of white sand and palm trees.

The interior of Andros is full of canals and sea beds, while the west coast of the island is by itself simply a fisher’s paradise. Location:

Grand Bahama island is one of the larger islands in the chain of over 700 islands that make up the Bahamas, and is located in the north of the cluster. The island is 96 miles wide and 17 miles long, and is situated fairly close to the USA, only 55 miles off the tip of Florida.

History:

Unfortunately, the Bahamas has a long and storied history of war and enslavement. For the first 2 centuries after Eurpoean contact, the island was largely under Spanish and pirate control. The shallow seas and coral reefs around the islands made it dangerous for ships to pass into the area, and giving pirates the ideal hiding spot.

In 1670, the British claimed ownership of the Bahamas, although initially, did little to abate the intensity of the pirate activity in the area. Eventually, the British were able to expel the pirates and the islands became a quiet place for the next few centuries. Brief

After the abolishment of slavery in 1834, several new towns were established by former slaves. Pinder’s Point, Russell Town, and Williams Town were all established by former slaves. The island of Grand Bahama remained relatively undeveloped until the middle of the 20th century, when development began to transform the island into a tourist destination for wealthy Americans. Today, Grand Bahama island has blossomed from that sleepy little Caribbean island into a popular tourist attraction.

The weather on Grand Bahama island is sub tropical, with temperatures average approximately 70-75°F degrees in winter, and up to 80-85°F degrees in the summer. Atlantis Aquaventure

For those of you who are new to the Bahamas, the Atlantis Aquaventure is a massive 141 acre water park located on the grounds of the Atlantis resort. For anybody staying there, it’s complimentary, otherwise you will have to pay a small fee inorder to enter. It’s a state of the art water park, complete with high speed water slides, a mile long lazy river, rock climbing, 11 different pools, and a kid’s fort. If you’ve got kids, visiting the Atlantis Aquaventure is pretty much a must.

If you’ve been to water-parks in North America, like SplashTown Waterpark or Water World, you know that they’re a lot of fun but incredibly crowded in the summertime. Fortunately, Aquaventure is not only a beautiful waterpark, but not very busy. You’ll have no trouble finding a great spot by the pool or a few empty lounge chairs for you and your family.

Some tips if you’re going to visit

In order to go on all the rides, kids must be at least 48 inches tall. If your children haven’t reached this height yet, they may be disappointed.

The food and drinks are alright, but a bit pricey (as within all waterparks). You can save a bit of money by buying food and drinks beforehand and bringing them with you, especially if you plan to spend the entire day there.

Versailles Gardens and French Cloister

If you’ve never visited the Versailles Gardens and French Cloister, you’re in for a treat. This little spot has to be one of the best kept secrets in the Bahamas, as many travellers spend weeks in the area and never hear about them. The Gardens are located on the eastern end of Paradise Island, on the Ocean Club property about 10-15 minutes walk from the Atlantis Resort. You can also take the ferry from Nasau to Paradise island and just walk 10-15 min from the docks.

The gardens themselves are impressive, with intricately carved statues of various gods and historical figures. There are also the ruins of an old French monastary brought here by France during the 1920′s, and reconstructed brick by brick in 1962 at the request of Huntington Hartford.

For couples looking for something relaxing to do, a trip to the gardens is perfect. You can spend all day looking at the statues of Hercules, Napolean, and others. A great spot to get some beautiful pictures, so bring your camera.

Segway Tour

This is a relatively new attraction that’s being offered from the Harboure side by Atlantis hotel. After a small class on how to operate your Segway, they take you on a large tour of the wilderness, winding through the forests along paths and canals. The area itself is huge, something in the area of 200 acres. It’s a relaxing and fun way to see a bit of the island!
