Gran Bahia Principe Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic advertises as a 5 stars hotel. While this is a decent hotel at a reasonable budget, the overall feeling of the hotel is at most a 3.5 out of five.

This cheap all inclusive Caribbean vacation resort is composed of sub-resorts, including a golden and a premiere sections. We stayed at the Punta Cana section of the resort.

Value. The price value of this cheap all inclusive Caribbean vacation package is more than affordable for people on a budget. The flight to the resort includes champagne, meals, snacks, drinks and alcoholic drinks (which we thought was pretty cool!). The shuttle to and from the resort/airport is also included in the price, like in most all-inclusive packages.

Cleanliness. The rooms were fairly clean, although we did notice a few bugs in the shower on our arrival. The premises were very clean and well maintained. A good thing about this resort is that they decided to keep some of the natural parts of the forest when building the resort. Hence, you will see a variety of wild life throughout your stay, including parrots, hummingbirds and lizards.

Rooms. The beds were some of the most uncomfortable beds we had tried in any resort. The duvet was not soft at all, the bed was hard and the pillows, not fluffy. They also seem to be a little bit stingy with the towels, provinding each guest with only one towel each. The TV was small, but includes a wide variety of english channels, including our favorite channel, the Food Network.

Beach. The beach was, with not doubt, the highlight of the resort. If you are looking for shiny turquoise blue water and white sand, you will find what you are looking for at Gran Bahia Principe.

Pools. There were two pools which were good, but not senstational. The main pool is located by the beach, and a second smaller and less busy pool is located in the middle of the long resort. The pools were very clean and both include a swim-bar. However, the main pool was cut in two by a big wall and I had wished they had had a big open pool with lots of little islands instead. There is no waiter at the pool, which we would like have to see.

Food. The food deserved a mediocre to an okay rating. The buffet included some interesting selections, but most of the time, while they seemed to get the look right, they unfortunately got the taste somewhat wrong. There was very little seafood (which is always the part I look forward to the most in all-inclusives) and a surprinsingly small selection of exotic fruits (papaya, passion fruit, pineapple and water melon). Unfortunately, on the very last day of the trip, my boyfriend seemed to got a little bit of food poisoning from breakfast, and had stomatch cramping and nausea all day. Because I had a few bites of his food, I also felt a little bit of discomfort on that day. I thought the snack bar offered better lunch than the buffet as it included flavorful bbq chicken. There were a few a-la-carte-restaurant. We tried the Domincan restaurant, which was our best meal of the week. Our reasoning was that chances were that they would get their own food right, which they did.

Staff. Some of the staff were pleasant, but most of them seemed miserable and unhappy to be there, although they always remained polite.

Overall : This 5 stars rated resort deserves only a 3/5 for the overall quality. While it offered all the amenities offered for a 4.5 or 5 stars resort, it lacked the quality of higher end resorts.

This hotel is recommended for people who are looking for a good all-inclusive resort price value, including families and people on a smaller budget looking for the 5 stars experience. But if you are looking for the cream of the crop, this resort is not for you. And we do not recommend that you pay the extra money for the premiere or golden sections of this particular resort, it did not look like it would be worth it.
